July picks

July has flown by! This month was so crazy between my NYC trip, a college visit to Johnson and Wales in Providence, and work. Although I was super busy, I managed to find time to check out some new products and I’d love to share them with you guys!

First up are these pants from Lilly Pulitzer! They are the beach pants in Serene Blue Big Escapade. I fit in the kids so they were cheaper and I didn’t have to get them hemmed lol. These pants are so comfy and light. I love wearing them when I want to look cute but be comfy. You can get them here or a store that carries Lilly. Since these pants are so bright, I’d recommend pairing them with a simple, solid top. In the picture above, I pared them with a white off the shoulder top from Old Navy and a long pendant necklace from Forever 21. Perfect for the end of summer!

My next pick is this Michael Kors bag I got in New York. It’s the Jet Set Travel Tote in medium size. I love the neutral color, it’s perfect for any outfit. The leather is coated so it doesn’t get dirty easily and if you spill anything on it, you can wipe it right off. I plan on using this bag for school this year because it’s big enough for my stuff and so cute! The pockets definitely made this bag for me, I hate having a big purse with no way of organizing! I couldn’t find this color on the website but there’s some other great colors here. I would totally recommend this bag for anyone who needs a basic tote with pockets.

Last is a snack that I’m obssessed with! These marshmallows are pineapple flavored, covered in toasted coconut, and only 90 calories for 4. I love bringing these in my beach bag because they’re light and sweet. I got these by the check out at Wegmans but you can order them online or use the location tracker to find a store. I want to try the strawberry ones next!

With school coming up, I want to do a few back to school posts this month. Definitely a school shopping haul and a senior picture look book in the works! Have a great August everyone ❤️

xoxo

NYC part 2

I had so much fun in NYC I couldn’t possibly squeeze it all into one post so here’s the second part of my fun week in the city.

The actual class I took was called the Foundations of Fashion Styling. Through out the week we took many fun field trips as a class while working towards a final project. Our project was to come up with a theme and create a look using $200 at H&M, Zara, and TopShop that would be used in a photo shoot. Our theme was “The Future is Female”. The first thing we did was get into groups of 3 and take tears from magazines to create a mood board which helped us figure out a vision for our model. After that, as a class we went to the three shops I mentioned above to get some fast fashion pieces to dress our model in. We then decided on hair and makeup and the crew came in on Thursday to shoot. We had a professional model, photographer, and glam team behind the scenes. It felt like a real life photoshoot! Friday, we looked at the pictures and chose 3 to be retouched. We still haven’t gotten our professional pictures back, but I did take a few of my own backstage.

Besides the photoshoot, we visited Bergdorf Goodman, Saks on 5th, the Met, and made a pit stop at Louis Vuitton on 5th. We spotted trends for this season as well as for the upcoming season (red for fall, anyone?) We also discussed what it’s like to be a stylist for different things like television vs print. I gained a lot of insight into the world of fashion styling although I’m not sure if I would consider it my top career choice.

As for going to college in the city, I think NYC might be a little too big of a jump for me. The bright lights and loud noises are fun for a bit, but after a few days it can get a bit overwhelming. A smaller city like Boston or Providence might be more my speed for continuing education. I never thought in a million years I’d be saying I don’t want to go to college in NYC but here I am. Maybe it’s the jump from rural to urban with no transition, but I’m not going to wish away my days at home anymore.

I was going to talk about things to try or skip in the city, but as I began thinking about it I feel that would be long enough for its own post! Below I will share some of my outfits from the week that I loved:

//Shirt~ Calvin Klein//Leggings~ Aerie//Shoes~ Journeys//Choker~ Forever 21//Sunnies~ American Eagle//

//Top~ Wet Seal//Pants~ Aerie//Shoes~ Macy’s (Madden Girl)//Bag~ Michael Kors//Necklace~ Rendevous the label//Bracelets~ Alex and Ani//

Hope you guys enjoyed reading about my experience and much as I enjoyed writing about it! Leave questions and comments below or on my Instagram (@styleby_jessica). Until next time,

My week in NYC part 1

There’s nothing like summer in the city! Last week I had the amazing opportunity to stay at LIM College for a week to learn all about the world of fashion business. This experience has been life changing and I’m so grateful my parents made it happen. I have so much to share with you guys that I’ve decided to break this post into a few parts so I don’t overload you guys lol
For those who don’t know, LIM is a fashion business school located in Manhattan. The dorms are on the Upper East Side and the hall where I took my classes, Maxwell, is in Midtown East.  Every summer they do a program for high school students where they stay in the dorms and take classes at the school. You can take 2 non credit classes or 1 credit course a day and it goes for 3 or 4 weeks. I only stayed 1 week and took a credit bearing class but there were many people staying more than one week. My class was called the Foundations of Fashion Styling. Going into it, I had no clue what to expect but by the end I was pleasantly surprised and walked away with so much knowledge. I can’t wait to show you guys all I’ve learned in an up coming look book!!!

The first day was rough, being in a small town my whole life made me feel like a fish out of water in the hustle and bustle. I had been to NYC before but never by myself! I quickly realized I was not alone and many other girls in the dorms we’re in the same boat as me. The dorms are nice for city living and if I had been there for longer than a week, I could have definitely made it cute and more home-y. If you’re going to take the LIM summer fashion lab, I would totally recommend staying in the dorms. I think it was a great experience to help me get ready for college next year.

// skirt- Amazon // top- Loft // shoes- Steve Madden // necklace- Rendevous the label // purse- Michael Kors // sunnies- American eagle //

Monday after class we hit up the Buffalo Exchange in Chelsea which was so cool! It’s like a really trendy thrift store. I was saving my money for other things so I only got a Juicy Coture velour zipup hoodie, which I’ve been in search of forever (now I just need matching pants). If you’re looking for trendy clothes at a low price in the city, I would definitely recommend checking a Buffalo Exchange! There’s a few locations in the city, I would have loved to check out another one considering Chelsea style isn’t really me. After that we went to the West Village (which is adorable!!) and got ice cream at a place called the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop. The ice cream was very good and they had a lot of unique flavors and toppings. It’s a short walk from the 6 line, which we took most of the week. The only issue we ran into was that we took the wrong train home and ended up on the west side, but that was nothing that a walk through Central Park didn’t fix!

The next day we went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the Commes De Garçon Art of the In between exhibit. The couture designs were displayed against white geometric backgrounds which let the individuality of each piece shine through. If you get the chance to go to NYC before the exhibit closes, definitely check it out!

After exploring inside, we took a trip up to the gorgeous roof top. The view was AMAZING!!! You can see the whole city from there.

Of course I had to break out my new Lilly jumper in You Gotta Regatta for this!!!! (Also peep my new MK tote that I am obsessed with!)

Next time I’ll tell you guys all about my actual class and share some other fun things I did on this trip. Until next time my loves

Xoxo,

Jessica

It’s a few days into July now which means summer is in full swing! 2 months off from school means freedom to do anything and everything. There’s so many things I’d love to do this summer as well as plans I already have. Between work, school obligations, and other commitments, making the most out of every free moment can be a challenge. It’s so easy to just sit at home and binge on Gilmore girls all day, but I am determined to seize the day this season! When I finish something from my summer bucket list, I will let you guys know via Instagram (either a post or story). So without further ado, here’s my Summer Bucket List:

June Picks

Another month has come and gone which means another round of monthly picks. I haven’t done a lot of shopping this month in preparation for my trip to NYC in early July, but I still would love to share 2 products with you all that I’ve been enjoying recently!

Getting my nails done is a must for me, I couldn’t live without my acrylic nails. The summer OPI line is my newest nail obsession! On my last trip to the nail salon I got Polly Want a Laquer on my fingers (first in middle row) and Getting Nadi on my Honeymoon on my toes (third in first row). Pink and purple is such a classic, girly color combo and these 2 colors compliment each other so well. All of these colors are so perfect for this season, but the bottom row shades are my faves out of the collection.

1_435644_ZM

My 2nd product is the New Balance 501 sneaker. I low-key thought these were not so cute when I first saw them, but they’re definitely a shoe that looks better on. They’re very comfy and light. I like them a lot for summer because they’re neutral and can be washed easily. I plan on wearing these a few times in my upcoming trip to NYC. I got mine in the color set pictured below, but they’re available in so many different colors and styles! The best part is, they run big so most women could probably squeeze into a kids size. You can get yours at Journey’s or wherever New Balances are sold.

Although I only had two items his month, I felt it was important to share them with you guys still. I definitely think these are items worth checking out! I’m going to do a haul/look book when I get back from the city and I have many exciting posts planned for the summer. Much love

xoxo, Jessica

Lilly, Lilly, Lilly!

Happy summer everyone! I’m so excited for three months of sun, adventures, and style. I’ve got some big things planned for this season that I can’t wait to share with you guys. As most of you probably know, National Wear Your Lilly Day, aka the brightest day of the year, was this week! Lilly Pulitzer is one of my favorite brands. My kindergarten graduation dress was a Lilly and I plan on getting one for my high school graduation next year too. The fun prints, bright colors, and darling designs make for wardrobe gold. They make me want to move to warmer weather so I can wear my Buttercup short all year long. Over the years I’ve started a small collection of Lilly garments and accessories. In honor of National Wear Your Lilly Day, I’m going to share my favorite pieces, prints, and how I style them!

lilly shortsMy first item is one I picked up last summer. The scalloped hem attracted me and I picked this print because I love the pinks and oranges on the blue background. This print is called Too Much Bubbly and it was out last summer. I usually pair these shorts with a white top like a Polo button down (pictured), v-neck, or cute tank. The plain white shirt lets the print pop and is easier to match than trying to find a color in the print (lol). My only complaint is these shorts don’t have a belt loop and I have to wear a belt with everything (I have no hips what-so-ever). I haven’t seen this print out this season, but there’s a bunch of other super cute prints on the site. My favorite print they have them in right now is Serene Blue Oh Shello, but all of these prints are adorable too!

lilly-dress.jpgIf I could live in this dress forever, I would. The 100% cotton material is so comfy and the neckline is universally flattering. I get so many compliments on this dress every time I wear it. This is the Linden Tee Shirt Dress in a print that I don’t remember the name of and can’t find anywhere (yes I know I’m the worst kind of Lilly owner). Dresses like this are so easy, you don’t need many accessories because the print speaks for itself. I typically pair this with my long gold tassel necklace I talked about in my previous post and a pair of sandals. In the colder weather, I’ll wear this dress with tall riding boots. Since it is 3/4 sleeves, you can wear in a little more into fall than some other Lilly dresses. I would 200% recommend this dress to anyone looking for their first Lilly piece or a casual, summer dress! Also if anyone knows what print this is, let me know please 🙂

Processed with VSCO with c1 presetI’ve been using Vera Bradley wallets for as long as I can remember. Although cute, they get dirty super easily and stain. When I found out Lilly made a similar wallet, I knew I had to have one! I use this wristlet all the time. I really like this product, it’s big enough to fit all my stuff, but not an awkward size. The detachable strap on it allows me to attach my Vineyard Vines lanyard to it (ensuring I never lose my keys or wallet), and the material is different than Vera Bradley’s. It’s shiny and easier to clean, if I get it dirty, it won’t stain. This print is Multi Exotic Garden, I got it as a free gift on Pink Friday. Ironically, the planner I ordered to get the free gift is the same pattern. This Tiki Palm “phone case”, as it says on the site, is not avalible through Lilly Pulitzer anymore. I’ve seen them at ZapposSaint Bernard’s, Ebay, and retailers that sell Lilly like Von Maur. Totally worth checking out if you need a cute everyday wallet!!!

Prints may come and go, but the bright colors will be forever. One of my favorite Lilly Pulitzer quotes is “Not always sunny, but always in a sunny state of mind”. This mantra is so true. Even if the weather outside is frightful or things don’t go your way, thinking sunny thoughts can make you feel like your in the happiest place on Earth. I love sharing my favorite products and styling tips with you all! As always, if there’s anything you’d like to see me write about soon or want me to try, leave a comment below or DM me on Instagram (@styleby_jessica). Until next time, loves!!!

xoxo, Jessica

Summer Accessories

Hi everyone! Sorry it’s been a bit since my last post, I’ve been busy with school ending and just plain writers block. Now I’m back and have an abundance of ideas (thanks to everyone on Instagram who gave me inspo)!

Accessorizing an outfit can be the hardest part of getting dressed. Differing jewelry can completely change the vibe of an ensemble. When I think of summer accessories, I think boho and warm gold tones. You can find a lot of items like this at Forever 21, American Eagle, and local shops or Etsy. Here’s some summer-y pieces I’ve found that I’d love to share with you guys!

IMG_20170404_151554732These Swarovski Crystal Halo Studs from CVDesigns Boutique in downtown Seneca Falls are my faves. I got them for prom, but they are perfect for spring/summer. The sparkle of the Swarovski Crystals looks so pretty against the rose gold setting. These are hand made right in my hometown which makes me love them even more! Although the pink opal with rose gold is not available on the website anymore, the same ones in a silver setting are, as well as topaz with turquoise, and all crystal in rose gold. CVDesigns also has the cutest ear jackets and boho style dangle earrings. While you’re on the site (here), check out the rest of her beautiful accessories, all hand cultivated by Christine VanDusen herself. Follow her on Instagram too for more lovely jewelry pictures, @cvdesigns_boutique.

gold tasselI’ve been seeing tassels everywhere this season. I love this trend, I think they’re adorable and add movement to any outfit. This gold tassel necklace from J Crew is great! I don’t have this exact one, but the one I have is very similar and I wear it with everything. I love it with tops like the one below, or off the shoulder shirts/dresses. So simple and cute, a necessity for summer!

cute-outfit.jpg
pearl neckalceThe next necklace is a steal! Less than 3 dollars at Forever 21 for this piece that goes with practically everything. It can be worn like a choker hat w neckalce.jpgor longer. I have it in gold, but it comes in silver as well. I wore it on my recent trip to NYC with two different outfits. It goes great with an off the shoulder or lower neck shirt. Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

My last piece for today is the black floppy hat (pictured above). Whenever I get to wear this hat, I know it’s a good day. To say I love this hat would be an understatement. I am obsessed with it. No summer vacation is complete without a floppy hat outfit. Wearing it makes me feel like a trendy fashionista wherever I go. The one I have is from Forever 21, but I’ve seen some at places like Plato’s Closet and other second hand stores like that. Such a cute piece that instantly makes your outfit more interesting.

These are just some of my favorite summer accessories and how I style them. I hope I’ve inspired your next outfit and helped you take the guess work out of accessorizing. An outfit without accessories is like toast without jam or butter! If you guys have any cute pieces you think I’d love, let me know! Trying new things is what life’s all about, right? Until next time,

xoxo Jessica

(Disclaimer: I do not get paid by any of these brands, this is my honest opinion)

My Holy Grail: Beauty Edition

Finding good makeup products can be a struggle. From figuring out what drug store products work to finding out what’s worth the splurge at Sephora, it can be a lot of time, money, and makeup remover. There are some products I re-buy every time I run out and some I am still seeking the ‘holy grail’ on. To help you you guys out, here’s a list of some products I re-buy every time or feel are worth the splurge:

dreambbI discovered this products last summer and haven’t stopped using it since! Maybelline Dream Pure BB cream is the best BB cream I’ve used. It’s light but still gives great coverage. I have combo skin and although moisturizing, it doesn’t get greasy after a few hours. If you want a light, everyday BB cream, I would totally recommend this one. You can get it at Target, Ulta, Walmart, or anywhere drug store makeup is sold.

boi-ing concealerMy next product is a bit of a splurge, but for random breakouts or dark spots, totally worth it. Boi-ing concealer from Benefit cosmetics is an amazing industrial strength concealer. I love this product because you can throw it in you purse for emergency coverage and it blends so easy. It’s normally $20, but at right now at Ulta it’s on sale for $15 and if you spend over $35, there’s a free gift!

dollyAnother more expensive product I think is totally worth the cost is Buxom Full-On Lipstick. I own it in Dolly (pictured), which is a lovely reddish nude color that I’ve never seen anywhere else. It’s plumping, but doesn’t tingle like some of the other Buxom products. Also, they’re matte, yet super hydrating which I haven’t seen in any other matte lipsticks. I have it in the shade Sydney too, which is my go-to nude lippie. They’re $20 at Ulta, but you can also buy them at Sephora for the same price.

mascaraMascara is a tough product to find a great one and stick to. I always found myself picking up a different one every other time I went to the store; until I found this one. L’Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black mascara is the AMAZING!!! My lashes have never been so long and natural looking. The carbon black line from L’Oreal is really great, it’s pure black and comes off easy in the shower. I’ve also tried the Voluminous Carbon Black mascara from them, it was a good mascara too, but I favor length over volume personally. You can get it from Walmart, Target, or wherever drugstore brands are sold for around $8.

natural eyes.jpgMy last product is the Too Faced Natural Eyes palette. These shadows are perfect for beginners or people who like a more natural eye look. It comes with a pamphlet that shows you how to do three looks: day, classic, and fashion. The looks are super easy to do, or you can mix and match to make your own look. I’ve had this palette for years and it’s always my go-to. It’s $36 at Ulta or Sephora, cheaper than the Naked palettes and easier to use.

I use these products almost every day and believe they are totally worth a shot. If you give any a try, let me know what you think! Also let me know if you have any ‘holy grail’ beauty items, I’m always on the look out for new stuff to try. Until next time, lovies!

xoxo,

Jessica

May Picks

May has come to an end which means we are basically into summer. Along with warmer weather, May brought fun fashion and beauty finds that I would love to share with you guys!

face mask

First up we have the Freeman Beauty Feeling Beautiful Clay mask in Sweet Tea and Lemon. I had never done a peel mask before this one so I had no clue what to expect. This was pretty easy to peel off and didn’t hurt. I’ve been doing it every Sunday and Wednesday before bed and my only complaint is that if you miss a spot, it’s semi-clear and looks like your face is peeling (like a sunburn). My face also gets super red when I’ve gotten it all off but it only lasts for like an hour so I wouldn’t do it before going out. Other than that, it leaves my face super soft and feeling fresh!

My next pick is the 4″ Dahila short from Lilly Pulitzer. I got these from the After Party sale but I haven’t worn them until now illy-shorts-e1496091523849.jpgbecause the weather wasn’t good enough. This print, Roar of the Seas, is no longer available but you can get them here in Brilliant Blue Ceviche, which is also a super cute print. Unlike the Callahan shorts, the Dahila shorts are a super soft, almost lounge-y material and the waistband is stretchy. I love these short so much, they are comfy, soft, and too cute. Definitely worth the wait!

happy bra

I stumbled across my next pick when shopping the Aerie memorial day sale. These bras that are perfect for anyone who loves a bralette but just want a little more support. They’re called the Happy bra, which I thought was just a super cute name, but after trying it on I can see why it’s named that. These bras are so comfy and light, you can’t help but smile. It’s all the comfort of a bralette with the support of a real bra. The one pictured is the plunge bra in “Be Pretty”, but they have tons of other styles and colors. They’re selling out fast online and in store so if you’re a common size, I’d order one ASAP.

vansMy last pick this month are these Vans Slip Ons in black. I was slightly skeptic about how comfortable these would be because the backs look blister-causing but I’ve worn them a bunch of times since I got them and not once have they hurt my feet. They’re also so easy to just slide on and off, unlike some other ‘slip on’ sneakers I’ve had before. Paired with jeans and a cute graphic tee, these are my new chill day go-to. You can get them here in a bunch of different colors, all for $49.99. Vans also last forever so for that price, you can’t go wrong.

I encourage you to try some of these products and let me know how you like them! I am not paid by any of these companies to promote their products so this is all my honest opinion. Lastly, follow me on Instagram to see more products I love throughout the month, @styleby_jessica. Until next time, loves

xoxo,

Jessica

Prom Prep Guide

Prom season can definitely be stressful. Between dress shopping, planning hair and makeup, making sure you have the right shoes and accessories, and that doesn’t even include actually going to school! I feel I have pretty much mastered the pre-dance routine for a fun, stress-free experience. So without further ado here is my ‘dance prep guide’:

3 to 1.5 months before: Let the dress hunt begin!

If you’re anything like me, you already have a pinterest board of dress ideas and hair styles to go with them. I use this as inspiration to see what styles and colors I’m liking. If there’s one dress that you really love, show it to the employees at whatever store you’re shopping at and they can try to find you something similar, if not the same thing. Wear a lightly padded bra, so you can see a more true fit, with convertible straps if you have one, so if you’re looking at a strapless dress you can get an idea of what if will look like. Being barely 5’3″, I bring my own heels to get a better picture of how big of a hemming job my dress will need. Going during a school break or on a weekend can be convenient, but the fitting room wait might not be. Unless you can’t go any other day, I would suggest going after school (or just skipping school) to avoid long waits and receive more individualized attention from the fitting room attendants. Don’t be afraid to not buy anything on your first trip! If you don’t see anything you love, don’t settle. Ask when a new shipment is coming in or wait two or three weeks to check back. Try another store or mall. My friends have told me they’ve found dresses in stores they never would have thought to look in, so I tried that for my ball dress and ended up buying the only formal evening dress in the whole store. If you do decide to order one online, order it WAY in advance so that way you have time to get it altered or return it and find a new one if it doesn’t work out.

1 month before: Make hair/makeup/nail appointments, get a trim, and get your dress altered (if needed)

Finding the perfect dress is only half the battle. If you don’t plan on doing your own hair, makeup, or nails, make sure you have an appointment ahead of time. Waiting until even the week before can lead to getting your hair/makeup done at 9 am or having wet nails during pictures. Getting a light trim a few weeks before the dance can ensure you no split ends for the big day and gives you the opportunity to talk to your stylist about what you want  your prom hair to look like. If you’re short, like me, getting your dress shortened is a need! Getting it fitted a month in advance gives your tailor time to do a good job and if there’s anything wrong with it, you can get it fixed. A big mistake people make is not bringing a pair of shoes with them to the fitting. Your tailor needs to see where to hem the dress so bringing a pair of heels similar in height to the ones you’re actually wearing can help determine where the dress will lie.

2-3 weeks before: Accessorize!

Accessories and shoes can make or break an outfit. Finding shoes to walk in all night can be hard so when you’re trying them on, walk around for a few minutes to ensure you won’t be tripping over your own feet. Decide whether your dress needs gold, silver, or both for jewelry. Based on your neckline, you may need a necklace. Earrings are usually a must, but your dress’s top and how you want to do your hair can determine dangle or studs. I don’t worry about bracelets if I have a corsage, but that’s personal preference. If you’re not sure about jewelry, here’s a cheat sheet to take the guess work out of it: necklace cheat sheet

Week of: Order flowers, buy tickets, get nails done, and don’t stress!

If you have a date, or just want a corsage, now would be the time to go to your local florist and order that. Tickets are a must! My school sells them up until about 2 days before, but make sure you get them so you can actually go to the dance. Nail salons can be packed the day before so if you didn’t make an appointment, get them done 2 or 3 days before and be careful with them!!! Nothing is worse than a nail malfunction. Try not to stress out too much! Get all your homework done on time and take it easy. Stress acne is a thing and sucks right before a big event like prom. Drink lots of water and go to bed early. I try to do a face mask two days before and take a bath to relax. Make sure you have everything ready at least 3 days before so that if you don’t, you can make a last minute mall run for whatever you forgot. Try on your dress again with everything so that you can see if you forgot something. Long story short; double check everything so you have no malfunctions the day of.

Day before: Prepare!

Wash your hair and face, shave your legs, and moisturize!!! I try not to wear makeup or anything so that my face is clean and fresh. Take it super easy and drink lots of water! Do your toes if you haven’t already. Pick up your flowers and find your tickets. Double check all your appointment times and make a rough schedule of how the day of should go.

Day of: Have fun!!!
Shower in the AM but don’t wash your hair! Unwashed hair is easier to style and will stay curled longer. Moisturize and make sure your face is makeup free before you go to your makeup appointment/do you makeup. I try to do my hair first , personal preference. However, no matter what you do first, wear a zip-up hoodie or button down shirt so you don’t have to pull anything over your hair/makeup after it’s done. I get dressed an hour/30 min before so my parents can take pictures with just me and I’m not rushing out the door. Don’t forget to breathe and smile. Have fun, this night is all about you!

Other things to consider: how you’re getting there, where you’re taking pictures beforehand and where you’re going after.

Prom can be one of the most fun nights of your life. Just remember to keep calm and take lots of pictures. You only live this moment once so cherish it and make memories that will last a life time. I hope this guide helps you have the best night ever and if you have any questions or comments, leave them below or message me on Instagram.

Here’s some pictures from my latest dance:
